Language Arts Literacy - Writing Class consists of two main components:
1. Writer's Workshop -Students will be working on a variety of full-process pieces throughout the year. These may include a persuasive piece, poetry, memoirs, a short story or folktale, and a self-selected.
- Students will learn how to craft and develop their writing as they progress through each stage of the writing process.
- Mini-lessons will target various skills such as leads and closings, word choice, sentence variety, voice, imagery, and figurative language.
- Students will learn how to give and receive constructive feedback as they participate in teacher and student conferences.
- Editing skills such as punctuation, usage, and spelling will also be targeted.
2. Word Work is the 2nd major component of our writing class.
- Students will begin to understand and recognize the structure of words as well as spelling patterns.
- Through etymology students will gain a better understanding of the meaning and origin of vocabulary words.
- Learning suffixes and prefixes will better equip students to decode and encode new vocabulary.
