English as a Second Language is a developmental program for non-native speakers of the language. Our program emphasizes the development of English vocabulary and structures in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Students in preschool through eighth grade receive ESL instruction daily. For the most part the ESL program operates as a pull out program with small groups of students drawn from regular classrooms by grade and/or language proficiency.
At the elementary school level, the pull out program provides ESL students with a minimum of thirty minutes of ESL instruction each day. An in-class support model is used for some pre-school and kindergarten students. The elementary program also offers the Magnet Center approach with ESL students drawn from schools and placed in a magnet center at one of three schools, for both ESL and regular program instruction. ESL students at the Voorhees Middle School receive a minimum of forty-five minutes of instruction per day in the ESL classroom.
