• English as a Second Language

English as a Second Language is organized to meet the needs of its Multilingual Learners (MLs). Our program emphasizes the development of English vocabulary and structures in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Students in Kindergarten through eighth grade receive daily ESL instruction. The ESL program primarily operates as a pull-out model, where small groups of students are taken from their regular classrooms based on their grade level and language proficiency. Preschool students also receive language support from their classroom teacher, who is provided with resources, professional development, and customized coaching from the Preschool Instructional Coach and an ESL teacher.

At the elementary school level, the program provides ESL students with a minimum of thirty minutes of ESL instruction each day at all four district elementary schools. ML students at the Voorhees Middle School receive a minimum of forty-five minutes of instruction per day in the ESL classroom.
