I just linked some online websites for games to help students practice reading the letters on the music staff- the lines & spaces.  Visit there often and practice- it will make reading  music notes a breeze!  Go the my "READING MUSIC!" tab on the left side of this page!

    October is Here!

Lessons are now underway- students should have their instrument, lesson book, and a music stand (for at home).  If you ordered (rented) an instrument, your child should be receiving it at their lesson.

Remember- the more you practice- the better you will get! Practice as many times a week as possible in-between lessons-at least 3 or 4 days a week.  More frequent, shorter practice time are more effective than just one or two long practice sessions a week.

    HAVE FUN!!

    WELCOME BACK!!

How to Be Successful In Music

Students must understand that there is only one way to be successful with a musical  instrument- through practice!  Practice can be fun, and the more you do it, the better you will be become on your instrument.  As your music teacher, I expect you to:

    -    Be prepared for each lesson in school.  That means bringing your instrument and music to each and every lesson.

    -  Practice!  Each student will learn their instrument at their own pace, but a general rule to follow is to practice at least 4 times a week. ONE practice session should last at least 15 minutes.

    - Try to set aside a dedicated “practice time”.  Just like we have times for eating, sleeping, or practice for a sport – if music has a specific time, we are less likely to forget to practice, and it will become part of the daily routine-that’s a good thing!

    -  Make practicing fun.  You should always practice your assignment, but put aside some time for creativity! Try and create your own song, try to figure out a song you like, improvise and play anything you like!

Parents:  you can help your child become a better musician, even if you know nothing about music!  Here’s how:

    -   Listen to what your child is practicing, and have them teach you what they learned in music class!

    -    Help your child set aside a specific time to practice each day (4 or more times a week), and help them set up a space that is away from other activities so they can really concentrate.

    -     Talk about what your child is learning, and once they can play some songs, have them do a small concert for you!

    -     encourage them to become a better musician.  No praise is worth its weight in gold quite like praise from a parent or grandparent.  Always give your child praise for taking on this musical challenge, and praise them for even the smallest of accomplishments.

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER --- and PRACTICE!!  :)

ATTENTION :  ALL OSAGE PARENTS AND STUDENTS-

The Osage Instrumental Music concert date had to be CHANGED due to a conflict in scheduling with the Voorhees Middle Schools' 6th grade orientation night (many of our 5th grade parents and students will be involved in that)- so the new date is: THURSDAY, MAY 21st

-This does not effect Kressons Concert Date- Kresson Concert is Thursday, May 14

     2/25/15
Band rehearsals are well under way!  Remember your instrument and music on both your lesson day AND your band day (they might be different days).  You can now practice along with various band selections at home, or just listen to them to get used to hearing them (that will also help you play them!).  It is on the "Practice At Home" page of this website, or:

     12/12/14

With the holidays approaching - I am hoping that students can find extra time to practice their assignments before January.  January marks the start of band rehearsals, and the better each individual student is, the better we can make the band and our performance!  Remember to make time to practice and get better on each and every song- make each song sound musical, connected, and flowing the way a song should be.  Play each song like you "mean it"! Try to get through entire songs (or sections of songs) without making any mistakes.  See if you can make yourself a better musician each and every time you practice.  Best of luck, and happy holidays to all my students and their families!!

    3) That's It!!  Then it's time to learn a musical instrument all year long free of charge!!

The sooner you can get your permission slip back to school, and your instrument rented (or maybe you have one already) the faster we can get started on lessons!!  So sign up now!

Voorhees Schools use City Music Center (A division of NEMC) as their rental provider.  Instruments can be rented by filling out the packet I send home after receiving the permission form, and mailing to City Music Center.  Or now, once I receive the permission slips and you receive the rental info, you can do everything online at www.citymusiccenter.com
If you choose to rent from City Music Center, you will receive everything you need (instrument, case, reeds, sticks if you're a drummer, etc...) YOU WILL NEED TO PURCHASE A LESSON BOOK AS WELL!!  It is right there in the rental packet.  The one extra I highly recommend is a music stand - this can be purchased through City Music as well, or many other music stores or online shops such as Amazon, etc.

I can not wait to see all my returning band members, and meet all my new ones!!  See you soon!!

     Mr. Farrell's Mission Statement:

"My mission is to create a positive and enthusiastic learning environment for my students that is based in music, that incorporates social skills, and will leave my students feeling like they have accomplished a sense of personal musical growth for themselves and for the ensemble they perform in. I feel that each student should leave the classroom with a sense of accomplishment, and should have the drive and desire to become a better performer. I want my class to be a step towards incorporating music as a permanent, meaningful part of a student's life".

Instrumental Music class here at Kresson/Osage Schools is the first step towards incorporating music as a permanent,  meaningful part of a student's life.  Students learn not only the fine motor skills on whichever instrument they choose,  but they will also learn life skills as well.  Playing with an ensemble not only teaches children to play with large groups,  but it also helps to develop the aural skills needed to develop a general appreciation for music.  The students have a small group lesson once a week to help them develop technique, reading,  and small group ensemble playing.  During the Winter/Spring,  the students come to a second large group band lesson with all the instruments present.  The students learn to blend their own sound with the sounds of other students/instruments. They learn how to conduct themselves in large group activities, and how to help each other make music as a band,  not as an individual.

If you are NOT renting an instrument, you will need to get the book for lessons, so:

Tell the associate what instrument your child plays, and they will be able to tell you if they have the book in stock.

Students may come to lessons even without a book/instrument until the end of October.  After this grace period ends, students must have an instrument to participate in the Instrumental Music program.
