• What is the homework policy for fifth grade?
Homework is an essential part of the 5th grade curriculum because it is a way of reinforcing what is taught throughout the school day.  Homework is assigned Monday-Thursday (with the exception of long-term assignments).  Homework should take about an hour.  Part of the homework period should be dedicated to reviewing basic math facts, studying/reviewing spelling words, and test preparation.  If your child is taking longer than the expected timeframe to complete given assignments, please contact me immediately.
    • Homework is 10% of the marking period grade.
    • Each day, the students are responsible for copying their homework in their planners.  Parents/guardians should sign the agenda after homework is completed each night.
Can my child celebrate his/her birthday at school?
Birthdays are a cause for celebration!  Your child is special and we want to make his/her birthday the best that it can be!  We celebrate birthdays any day of the week!

There are a few things that I ask that you keep in mind when sending in a birthday treat for your child:

    • Please send in enough treats for 25 students.
    • If you would like to send a treat this year, please make sure to send in pencils, stickers, or other small non-food items
    • If you are delivering the birthday treats to the school, please drop them off by 12 pm. You can also send them in with your child when they arrive at school in the morning.

If your child has a summer birthday, you may choose to celebrate it on their "half birthday" or from a list of dates that I will send home towards the end of the school year. Please let me know at least 24 hours in advance about when your child would like to celebrate his or her birthday, so we can plan accordingly.

What does my child need for school?
Please click School Supplies for a list of what your child will need.

How will I know my child's progress?
All grades will be found in your child's Google Classroom under the corresponding subject.

I firmly believe that an open line of communication between parents and myself is a key to your child's success. You may contact me at any time to discuss your child's progress. I can be reached by e-mail at Austin@Voorhees.K12.NJ.US or through Class Dojo. I will also contact you immediately if there is a need for concern between report cards and conferences.

When will I receive my child's graded tests/quizzes?
Parents will receive an invitation to view their child's Google Classroom in September. This will allow you to see if assignments are missing by the end of each week. You can also log in through your child's device to see their posted grades for each individual assignment.

All grades will be posted on Google Classroom under the corresponding subject. The majority of the tests/quizzes in 5th grade are online, so you can also view the assignment through the links provided in your child's Google Classroom. Any classroom or homework that are paper/pencil will be graded and sent home in your child's green Take Home Folder. The grade will also be posted in Google Classroom. All test grades will be posted directly to Google Classroom.

If you have any questions or concerns about a grade, please contact me by e-mail or through Class Dojo and I will get back to you within 24 hours.

What should I do if my child is sick and is not attending school?

Please call the school nurse and report your child absent. You may leave a message on her voicemail. You may also send me an email before 9:00 am and I will notify the nurse and main office.

I need to change my child's dismissal for the day, what should I do?
If you need to change your child's dismissal anytime throughout the day, the best way is to let me know through Class Dojo or an email. You may also call the main office and let them know about the change and they will notify me. Please be sure to notify the school before 3:00 pm.

My child has been absent from school for an extended period of time.  How can I receive the work that he/she missed?
Missed work will be saved and sent home upon the child's return to school. You may also see what we have been working on and what the homework is by checking Google Classroom. Once your child returns to school, the work will be reviewed then it is the child's responsibility to complete the work in a timely manner.

Please complete the missed work over the next few evenings. The school policy is that your child has as many days to complete the missed work as they were absent.

If your child has been out of school for 3 or more days and you would like to pick up work before your child returns to school, please send me an email or Class Dojo message and I will let you know as soon as possible when the work will be in the office vestibule for you to pick up.  Please try your best to give at least 24 hours notice that you would like to pick up their work. This allows time to prepare the missed work. If you would like the work sent home with another child, please also let me know at least 24 hours in advance.

What if my child is out of school because of a family trip/vacation?
Please let me know as soon as possible, the dates your child will be out of school, so that the work can be prepared for them when they return.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions!
