When should my child stay home?

    Consider the following three questions…

1/ Does your child have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea?

A fever is generally a sign of illness, so children should remain home from school. An elevated temperature accompanied by other significant symptoms that may affect their participation in school should also be considered as a reason to stay at home. Please ensure your child’s temperature has been normal for at least 24 hours prior to sending them back to school (without the use of antipyretics/fever-reducing medications).

Vomiting and diarrhea can be due to anything from viral infections to medications such as antibiotics. Generally, your child should not return to school until 24 hours after vomiting/diarrhea has ceased. If you suspect a non-contagious etiology for symptoms please discuss with the School Nurse prior to sending your student to school - symptoms must be manageable in a school setting.

2/ Does your child have an illness like the flu or conjunctivitis which may be contagious?

If you think they might - please don’t send them to school until you know they are not contagious.

Please have your student evaluated by a Physician. For Strep throat, Impetigo and Conjunctivitis, please ensure they remain at home for at least 24 hours after the start of prescribed medications - and - in the case of Conjunctivitis specifically, there should be no discharge present.

3/ Is your child well enough to participate in class?

If they seem too unwell or run down to get much out of their lessons - please keep them home.
