The Shift Continues: One to One iPad Initiative to Launch in Voorhees Schools

We are excited to announce a new initiative that will transform teaching and learning at the Voorhees Middle School. Next school year, every student and teacher will receive an iPad. The program will enable teachers to seamlessly infuse technology within their instructional setting. The district recognizes that shifts in instructional practices are required in order to meet the needs of 21st century learners. Thus, we believe the iPad program will provide teachers and students the tools necessary for a modern educational focus.

Since the 1980’s, the Voorhees School District has been committed to technology integration as demonstrated by the robust programs that have evolved and emerged throughout the years. The district does not stand still as we continue to embrace the future.

The implementation of the 1:1 iPad initiative is the next logical step towards the district’s goal of providing meaningful instruction while providing students the necessary skills to be productive digital citizens. Policies, regulations, and procedures are being constructed to ensure an effective and safe use of these personal devices. Lessons will be delivered in a variety of instructional settings focused on digital responsibility and the impact of a person’s digital footprint.

The rationale of the 1:1 iPad program at the Voorhees Middle School is to provide students and staff with tools and resources to create a modern learning environment that will prepare students to be successful in high school, college and ultimately be career ready. We recognize that technology integration should be seamless and allow students to create, think critically, problem solve, collaborate, and communicate in new, meaningful, and interesting ways. This initiative will provide more opportunities to explore authentic problems, to demonstrate personal responsibility and to allow for greater choice in how students present their new knowledge.

Digital textbooks will ultimately replace the traditional text book and every student will be able to access these and many other resources on their personal device at school and at home. This fall a new math textbook will be introduced and it will be in a digital format. Currently the Social Studies program is also digital. As textbooks are reviewed and new ones acquired, we look forward to the future when every student will utilize a complete digital “portable” textbook. Since digital textbooks are significantly less expensive than their counterparts, current textbook funds were reallocated to lease purchase the iPads. Therefore, no additional funding was necessary and the iPads will be paid for within the current budget.

Each staff member at VMS will also be provided with an iPad. Staff will receive comprehensive support and staff development throughout the school year. This is a chance for staff to transform their instruction by providing students opportunities to engage in authentic tasks.

Students will be active participants in constructing their own knowledge and applying skills in creative, consequential ways. We believe that this new program will increase student creativity, critical thinking and overall intellectual engagement.

Voorhees Schools has always valued high levels of student achievement and success. The iPad program will allow for a continued focus on powerful student learning.  Opportunities for students to apply digital learning are only limited by the creativity of our children and educators. The goal of the new program is to empower our teachers and students and to transform classroom instruction. This initiative promotes equity and opportunity to allow all students access to a superior education that will ultimately impact their success in an ever-changing global society.
