ESL Program
Multilingual Language Learners
VTSD ESL Program
In the Voorhees Township School District, the ESL program is a PreK-8 support service designed for multilingual learners (MLs) who are learning English as their second, third, fourth, or more language. The goal of the program is to develop English proficiency and academic success by focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills within academic content areas, such as science and social studies, while using methodologies aligned with state and federal standards like the WIDA English Language Development (ELD) Standards, the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS), and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Certified ESL teachers provide systematic, explicit, and sustained standards-based and language focused instruction.
In PreK, students receive language-rich instruction and services to help them meet state academic standards and develop English proficiency with the goal of long-term academic success. Preschool teachers provide instruction with the ESL teacher providing materials.
In the elementary and middle schools, MLs must have at least one period daily of ESL instruction taught by a certified ESL teacher. A period is equivalent to the time allocated in the school schedule for instruction in the core subjects. High-intensity programs for students requiring more support can include two or more periods of ESL daily.
