WHY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELORS? Attitudes formed during elementary school shape future attitudes toward learning, self and society. For many people, the word "counselor" takes them back to the image of someone they saw a few times in high school to help them with their schedule. Elementary counselors respond to today's needs by providing children with comprehensive school counseling programs. DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS Elementary school is a time when students develop decision-making, communication skills and character values. Our comprehensive program is prevention-based and proactive in nature. Early identification and intervention of children's problems are essential. If we wait until the middle or high school years, we may lose the opportunity to help them achieve their potential, as well as feelings of dignity or self-worth. The school counselor works to become a person the child might regard as positive and trustworthy. IN THE CLASSROOM We may focus lessons on areas such as: understanding self and others, coping strategies, peer relationships and effective social skills, problem-solving, decision-making, conflict resolution, study skills, multicultural awareness and character education. INDIVIDUAL & SMALL GROUP These counseling settings may find us exploring self-image, family issues, academic development, responsibility planning and other areas of concern. GENERALLY SPEAKING We consult with staff, parents, and outside sources, coordinate school and community resources, facilitate programs that promote students' personal growth, communicate and exchange information with families. GO TEAM! Thanks for reinforcement at home, which is crucial to any successful program. Let's continue to work together to help our children achieve their fullest academic, social and emotional potential. |
