The Reading Enrichment Read-Aloud Program

It's Reading Enrichment Read-Aloud Lessons With Mrs. Howard

Each year the reading enrichment read-aloud program changes.  Over a weekly period for the 2005-2006 year, the theme is "The Wonderland of Words."  The read-aloud selections have been focusing on vocabulary development.
We began with a series of books that have developed word awareness.  Here are the books chosen for the read-aloud program so far:
  • Johnny Appleseed by Will Moses with a video follow-up.  The video focuses on the expression, "An apple a day..."
  • The Three Questions by Jon J. Muth helps develop responding to three important questions.
  • The 2000-Year-Old Man Goes to School by Mel Brooks and  Carl Reiner generate humor through the old man's clever, comedic responses to the children's questions.
  • Mr. Peabody's Apples by Madonna shows the wisdom of choosing and using words.
  • Zathura by Chris van Allsburg with a follow-up on the Zathura movie version.  Also, we have explored Jumanji, van Allsburg's first Caldecott-winning picture book, 1981. The great appeal is the opportunities to compare both works.
  • Thank You, Sarah: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving by Laurie Halse Anderson is humorous and informative.  The author blends historical information with a cartoon-styled format.
  • Disney's Chicken Little is the delightful interactive book based on the current film. The book has sound effects built in for use throughout the story.
