Instrumental Music Parent Information

 
  • 4th and 5th grades are illegible for the programRegistration form due into music tacher by the end of the 2nd week of school.
  • Must provide own instrument- may rent or purchase from anywhere, or use a handed down instrument
  • Instruments must be in ready to play condition by Oct. 1.
  • Bring in instrument to be checked by teacher by 9/20.

 

Overview of Instrumental Music Program

  • Free weekly lessons on one of 10 instruments offered
  • Students pulled from classes that meet everyday.
  • We try not to pull from math, social studies or science unless approved or recommended by the classroom teacher.
  • Students with IEPs will be scheduled by their academic teachers and the music director in accordance to their IEP.
  • Lessons are group lessons  and last about 30 minutes.
  • Lessons start in October  and end in June, at the end of the school year.
  • Each school presents a Spring Concert as a cumulative end of year activity.
  • Students receive report card grades based on participation, practicing and progress.

 

Ensembles-

  • Each school has 2 bands, beginning and advanced, and a string orchestra
  • Each large group meets on a different afternoon at 2:45- 3:20 and rehearses for the spring concert.
  • Students must achieve a minimum level of progress in order to participate in the ensemble.
  • Ensemble rehearsals are in addition to the weekly lesson and begin in January  

 

Student Responsibilities-

  • to attend lessons and rehearsals each week
  • to bring instrument and music to lessons and rehearsals
  • to practice assignments at least 4 days a week
  • to fill out practice record completely and honestly
  • to take care of their instrument and music

 

Parent Responsibilities

  • to provide an instrument in good condition and the necessary music and accessories
  • to encourage and support their child with practicing and performing
  • to provide a well lit, quiet area of the home to practice
  • to provide for the repair of the instrument, if needed
  • to provide transportation to and from the spring concert

 

Instruments-

  • If a repair is needed please bring in instrument to teacher ASAP. Do not attempt repairs yourself.
  • Most minor repairs can be done at school, but bigger ones can be sent to City Music Center for an estimate.
  • Rented instrument (from City Music Center) receive free repairs.
